A novel motion estimation strategy based on symmetric triangular wave modulation for FMCW UAV SAR

ABSTRACT

Symmetric triangular linear frequency-modulated continuous wave (STLFMCW) signals include an up-ramp chirp and a down-ramp chirp. These two chirps can be treated individually as successive pulses for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging. Since Doppler frequency shift between the two chirp signals contains information in both the azimuth and range direction, it can be utilized for motion estimation regarding the observed scene is static. This letter presents a novel motion estimation strategy based on STLFMCW signals for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) SAR. First, the STLFMCW signal error model is built. Then, an effective estimation strategy based on spilt-band signal interference is developed to extract radial displacements from raw data. Finally, simulations validate the proposed strategy.
