Abstract

The idea of the psychological contract, as a tacit mental representation of an employee’s expectations of the work exchange with the employer, is congruent with the concept of a construction, as recognized by constructivism and personal construct psychology (PCP) in particular. This relationship was addressed by examining how a group of employees construe their psychological contracts. The empirical findings challenge the received wisdom that the psychological contract emerges during work socialization in response to environmental cues and signals, positing instead that antecedent individual and social experiences contribute to work predispositions that independently shape and influence psychological contract construal. Specifically, the findings point to the role of sociality in sharing cultural values that materially define the construction.
