On the track of MDSCs during acute sepsis and in long-term sepsis survivors

Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) are known to be involved in the progression of sepsis inmice. However, due to the lack of a standardised approaches, it has been challenging to translate these observations to patients.

In this issue, De Zuani et al. used a comprehensive flow cytometry panel to follow MDSC dynamics in the development of sepsis and in sepsis survivors. Taking advantage of manual gating and unsupervised metaclustering algorithms, the authors showed that monocytic and polymorphonuclear MDSCs are expanded during the initial stages of the pathology. Furthermore, compared to age-matched healthy donors, patients who survived sepsis showed an accumulation of polymorphonuclear MDSCs which persisted many months after the recovery from sepsis.

This study suggests that MDSCs might play a role in the long-term immunosuppression observed in sepsis survivors and could, thus, represent a valuable therapeutical target to improve the quality of life of these frail patients.
