In Reply We would like to thank Acuña et al for their Letter to the Editor in response to our recent Research Letter addressing the association of sex, race, and ethnicity with receipt of National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding by surgeon-scientists.1 We wholeheartedly agree with their concerns regarding identification of race and ethnicity, and we would extend their concern to include sex as well. While we detailed our methods and highlighted our methodological choices as a limitation in the Research Letter, their concern is valid and underscores the need for accurate data to inform future efforts to improve broad representation in science.
