Indoles and their close derivatives, indolines and carbazoles, have been of interest to synthetic chemists due to their prevalence in natural products and biologically active molecules. In particular, the activation of inert C ¨C H bonds presents an elegant means to prepare these heterocycles from simple precursors. This review will highlight the versatility of palladium-catalyzed C ¨C H activation for the preparation of indoles, indolines, and carbazoles, discussing intramolecular cyclization and multi-component ring construction strategies.
