Analysis of Magnetic Shielding Effect on an RFID Coil Antenna in Metallic Environments With a Ferrite Toroid

Deleterious effects of the metallic environments on a radio frequency identification (RFID) antenna are often alleviated by the magnetic shielding. This article presents a novel model to study quantitatively the magnetic shielding effect on an RFID coil antenna in metallic environments with a ferrite toroid. From the proposed model, the magnetic field intensity within the antenna is derived, and the computational results are in good agreement with those from the numerical simulations. Then, the optimal geometrical parameters of the ferrite toroid for proper shielding are investigated, and the shielding effect on an RFID solenoid coil antenna against the metal is discussed. Finally, an experiment has been carried out and the results show that the shielding with the ferrite toroid can alleviate the deleterious effects of the metals almost completely.
