A response to Moore
ELT Journal ( IF 3.1 ) Pub Date : 2021-06-25 , DOI: 10.1093/elt/ccab030
Luke Lawrence , Yuzuko Nagashima

We are grateful to Moore (2021) for taking the time to read our article and to offer supportive but critical feedback. In his response, Moore points to the lesson activity which is reported on in the original article in which Luke’s students engaged in a formal discussion of whether same-sex couples in Japan should be allowed to adopt children. Moore argues that it is not appropriate for students to debate whether or not LGBTQ+ individuals deserve basic human rights and that to do so would mean that a safe space is not being created for queer students in the classroom. Moore finishes by calling ‘on all ELT practitioners who give learners tasks that invite them to question the basic human rights of queer people to suspend the practice immediately’.
