Effect of Dietary Supplementation of Probiotic Bacteria (Lactobacillus plantarum) on Growth and Proximate Composition of Cyprinus carpio Fingerlings

The present experiment was conducted to study the effect of dietary supplementation of probiotic bacteria (Lactobacillus plantarum) on growth and body composition of common carp. The experiment was conducted in fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) tanks (1.5 × 1.0x0.75 m), consisted of 5 treatments (T1, T2, T3, T4 and T5) with 3 replicates each for 120 days. Probiotic bacterial strain L. plantarum FLB1 was incorporated into test diets at different level [@ 0 (T1), 106 colony-forming unit (CFU)/g (T2), 107 CFU/g (T3), 108 CFU/g (T4) and 109 CFU/g (T5) of test diet] to study the effect on growth and body composition. Water quality parameters particularly dissolved oxygen and ammonia significantly (p ≤ 0.05) improved in T5 compared to control but remained within the range for carp culture in all the treatments. At the end of the experiment (120 days), NWG, % NWG, SGR, K-values and survival rate (%) were also maximum in T5 (37.82, 271.89, 1.09, 1.30 and 96.29, respectively) and minimum in T1 (25.29, 179.48, 0.85, 1.11 and 81.47, respectively) with significant differences (p ≤ 0.05). FCR and PER improved significantly (p ≤ 0.05) in T5 (1.97 and 1.53, respectively) compared to control (T1). Significant increase (p ≤ 0.05) in the flesh protein (%) and total lipid (%) content was recorded in T5 (16.21 and 2.83, respectively). Overall results revealed that dietary supplementation of L. plantarum @ 109 cfu/g diet is effective in improving water quality, growth and proximate composition of Cyprinus carpio.
