ABSTRACT

While storing cryogens at atmospheric pressure, the key parameters governing the ullage space temperature profile are the heat leak rate, the rate of evaporation of liquid and release of vapor to maintain an isobaric state, and the initial fill-level. An analytical model, based on the basic thermodynamic laws, is proposed. The model is capable of predicting the spatial and temporal variations of temperature in the ullage space. An experimental test rig is designed exclusively to record the vapor space temperature profile with the evaporating liquid nitrogen maintained at atmospheric pressure. Experimental data and the simulated results are in excellent agreement.
