Microbiogenic thrombolites from the Cambrian Miaolingian Series of southern North China Craton

Abundant thrombolites in the Cambrian Miaolingian Series, southern North China Craton, are categorized as Girvanella thrombolites and Epiphyton thrombolites based on the varied calcified cyanobacterial morphotypes. Girvanella thrombolites are columnar and spotted with stratiform or domal shapes macroscopically. The columnar thrombolites comprise the irregular columnar clots with many well-preserved Girvanella in upright form. The spotted thrombolites consist of irregular patchy clots, comprising plenty of tangled and intertwined Girvanella. Epiphyton thrombolites are commonly domal in shape and comprise many spotted clots or dendritic clots. Microscopic observations show that Epiphyton are spherical in the spotted clots but dispersed in dendritic clots. The morphology of the calcified cyanobacteria in different types are closely related to the hydrodynamic conditions. The microscopic features of the Girvanella, imply uniform nucleation sites, while Epiphyton, indicates heterogeneous nucleation sites. These two different distribution patterns of nucleation sites result in clotted fabrics variations of the thrombolites. Further studies on the characteristics and environments of these Cambrian thrombolites in the Henan Province, are expected to offer significant evidence for the analysis of thrombolite genesis.
