Pavement Performance Enhancement Using Waste Rubber: Green Pavement Design for Kuwait

The massive amount of solid waste, especially used tires, is one of the most problematic environmental issues facing Kuwait recently. This has caused a rapid increase in the environmental pollution levels. Furthermore, Kuwait’s road network showed a weak performance against traffic loads and climatic changes recently causing the appearance of several pavement distresses. This paper enhanced the design of type III wearing coarse layer by incorporating the tire rubber into the Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) to produce the Pelletpave product. Pelletpave contains at least 20% recycled tire crumb rubber incorporated in the mix. Marshall Mix Design Method was used to prepare all required specimens. To compare Pelletpave and conventional HMA in terms of quality and cost, two asphalt mixes were prepared. The first asphalt mix contained only conventional bitumen as a binder while the second mix contained a conventional bitumen mixed with the tires crumb rubber. A ratio of 3:2.7 pellet to bitumen was selected. Three binder contents for each binder type were selected: 4.5%, 5.4%, 5.9%. To ensure the best selection of the optimum binder content, a 4th binder content was chosen for an extra trial. The 4th binder content was determined based on the test results and the air void percentage of the three initial mixes as 4.4% for the conventional bitumen and 6.4% for the Pelletpave. Using trial-and-error for the Pelletpave mix, the optimum binder content was chosen as 6%, it showed an air void percentage value of 6.7%, a stability value of 18.63 kN that satisfied the required criteria. Pelletpave mix showed a high initial cost, but it has a lower life cycle cost than the conventional mix. So, it is a cost-effective mix.
