ANION–CATION VERSUS WEAK INTERMOLECULAR INTERACTIONS IN THE STRUCTURES OF Et4N+, Pr4N+, AND Bu4N+ CATION SALTS WITH THE [W(CN)6(bpy)]2– ANION

Abstract

Cyanide complexes are used as metalloligands to obtain multicore complexes with magnetic properties. Hexacyanides [W(CN)6(L)]1–/2– {L = 2,2′-bipyridine (bpy) or 1,10-phenanthroline (phen)} are the systems suitable for testing the magnetic coupling between W(V) and other paramagnetic centres. In this study, the synthesis of [W(CN)6(bpy)]2– with selected tetraalkylammonium cations (Et4N+, Pr4N+, and Bu4N+) and the X-ray diffraction structural analysis of single crystals of three salts (Et4N)2[W(CN)6(bpy)]·3H2O, (Pr4N)(PPh4)[W(CN)6(bpy)](CH3)2CO·H2O, and (Bu4N)2[W(CN)6(bpy)](CH3)2CO are described. The relationship between the cation type and the [W(CN)6(bpy)]2– ion packing system is discussed. Selected physicochemical properties as IR spectra and the elemental analysis of the complexes are also presented.
