ABSTRACT In early 2020, the world was thrown into chaos with no organization, country, or individual escaping the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Just a year before in 2019, community colleges, universities and schools were thriving. 2020, however, was a year that none of us predicted, marked by the pandemic, as well as, other cataclysmic disrupters and shattering events. With a vastly different landscape, community colleges were confronted with dramatic shifts in how they operated and who they served. This article reflects on 2020, especially noting implications and challenges for community colleges. The pandemic highlighted inequities that already existed in society with opportunities for community colleges to model the way by being true to their egalitarian mission. Research questions are posed in areas of leadership; curriculum; funding; social and racial tension; self, family and community; and health and safety. A challenge for all who lead and study community colleges is to openly embrace these evolving questions and seek sound answers and creative solutions. Practitioners, leaders, policy makers and researchers are encouraged to learn from each other and to collaborate and document this era of challenge and change.
