The evolution of primary alpha phase and its effect on microtexture in Ti6242S during post-deformation heat treatment

In this paper, the evolution of primary α (αp) and its effect on microtexture during post-deformation heat treatment of Ti6242S alloy were investigated. It was found that in the obtained bimodal microstructures, there existed three types of α/α misorientation angles in elongated αp grains, and their formation was closely related to the BOR (Burgers orientation relationship) between αp and the neighboring β grains. During the heat treatment, the boundary splitting tended to refine αp grains, which was not only associated with α/α misorientation angle, but also the BOR between αp and β phases. If the effect of pre-deformation on the diffusion rate of solute elements was considered, the boundary splitting time quantitatively predicted by the Mullins model was greatly underestimated. Meanwhile, the crystallographic orientation distributions of bimodal microstructures were inhomogeneous, and the microtextured areas were formed. This was because when αp and the neighboring β grains obeyed a BOR, secondary α (αs) colony preferentially precipitated at αp interface and occupied a larger area, and αs colony kept a similar orientation with the αp. Moreover, αs colonies enhanced the pre-existing αp texture components, which led to local area displaying a cluster of α phase with similar orientations.
