religiously framed suffering was used as an excuse to medicalize women who refused to conform to the gender norms of the era. But again, it is not clear how Peschier goes about distinguishing cases of real insanity from madness conjured up by misogynistic doctors. Nevertheless, Lost Souls is a rich book. Peschier’s past research focused on Victorian religion and literature, and her deep grasp of these topics enables her to highlight aspects of female madness that are, if not always surprising, then certainly clarifying. As such, I think this book will be of great relevance to researchers and postgraduate students interested in how religion shaped experiences and the treatment of insanity in the nineteenth century.
