Healthcare systems around the world have evolved and become complex for governments to manage with cost and navigation ramifications for patients. As a result, many countries have taken steps to integrate their healthcare systems with the aim of providing one-stop health shopping for patients at lower costs. However, there is still a lot to be learned about the success with the integration of the mental health, addictions, and problem gambling systems in Canada. This study, using an instrumental case study approach, explored the integration of the three systems from the perspective of predominantly frontline managers and problem gambling counselors in Ontario. Study participants reported an uneven integration of the systems across the province. Problem gambling appears to have been significantly sidelined among the three services. We recommend cross-unit training, retooling, and joint financing as possible solutions to strengthening the integration of the three service systems.
