Effect of adhesive and nanocomposite layers on lap shear strength of layup bonded joints

Abstract

In this paper, the effect of each method consists of a new adhesive layup method of neat adhesive and nanocomposite layer, and simple bonded (SB) joint was proposed in single-lap joints (SLJ). The graphene nanoparticles (GNPs) were added to Araldite 2011 adhesive, and steel 304 was selected as adherends. Two types of graphene (types I and II) were used in nanocomposite construction, that their main differences were in the characteristics of GNPs. Also, various laminated neat adhesive and nanocomposite (types I and II) in layup methods and SB joint with neat adhesive were prepared for the joints. Experimental results show that among all methods, layup II has a significant increase in joint strength. In particular, the enhancement of failure load in layup II is 31%, 25%, 73%, and 51% higher than SB, layup I, III, and IV, respectively. In fact, the location of each layer and bondline thickness has a great impact on joint strength.
