Marco E. Metzger

Professor William E. Walton (1956–2020) was a giant in the field of mosquito control through wetland management. His early work in aquatic ecology led to an outstanding academic career in the Department of Entomology, at the University of California, Riverside, where mosquitoes became the unifying feature of his varied research. Underpinned by a solid basic science foundation, the primary focus of his studies was non-chemical control of mosquitoes via habitat design and manipulation, natural enemies, bacterial larvicides, growth regulators, and fungi. This paper presents a summary of his scientific contributions to the fields of aquatic ecology, medical entomology, and toxicology, highlighting his laboratory and field-based research findings. The full version of this manuscript that includes Bill’s entire body of work is available as Supplemental Material accompanying the online article.
