ceding the outbreak of Revolution. Rather than drawing a direct line to 1789, he suggests that many of the more popular and potentially subversive works such as Louis S ebastien Mercier’s best-selling L’An deux mille quatre cent quarante or Mathieu-François Pidansat de Mairobert’s Anecdotes sur Mme la Comtesse du Barry showed their readers that ‘an alternate reality was thinkable’ (305). The debate about the political impact of these works as well as enlightened literature more generally will rumble on, but in the meantime Darnton’s study delivers what it promises, namely a fascinating account of the world of books in the reign of Louis XVI.
