Yugoslavia, represented here not only by Bokovoy but also John Paul Newman and Petra Svolj sak, reminds us that its members not only had complex histories that stretched back centuries, but in fact had been on opposite sides in the most recent conflict. Nor was this a case of letting bygones be bygones; as Newman notes, the war of ‘liberation and unification’ that united ‘all South Slavs’ was complicated by the fact that the Croats and Slovenes fought against the Serbs, further demonstrating the vital influence that Austria-Hungary exerted on Europe even after its collapse. In this case, the nation that resulted from Balkan unification was by necessity fraught and fractured, its unity a fiction held together by violence and erasure. In this sense, Svolj sak’s chapter is an appropriate encapsulation of the book as a whole, looking at the dual sacrifice of both the body and the memory of that body. What this should tell us is that any work that attempts to engage with AustriaHungary’s war and its aftermath is ambitious indeed – arguably more so if it takes the form of an edited collection. Perhaps fittingly for its subject matter, however, this collection, made up of diverse approaches and viewpoints, comes together to create a cohesive whole that should be required reading for students of the First World War and the interwar period. More than that, however, the contributors have offered us a remarkable insight into practices of memorialization and commemoration in the context of a multifarious legacy that remains contested and shaped the twentieth century in a way all too often dismissed as a sideshow consisting of ‘far-off countries about which we know nothing’, as Chamberlain might have said. In bringing light to this, the authors, and especially the editors Cornwall and Newman, are not just to be congratulated but also thanked.
