and its political commitment to adequate and accessible housing. The book is also strong on detail, particularly in relation to Latin America, as might be expected. However, the most powerful and most illuminating sections are when the narrative is about real people: What happened to them? Why? How did they feel? How should we place these stories in the wider, intellectual narrative about financialisation and neoliberalism? At a time when much current academic research on housing and urban studies prioritises the technical and methodological over the conceptual, big data over thick description, the numerous, short vignettes in Rolnik’s book remind us of the effectiveness of a real story to convey a wider message. In this context, I noted with some relief that ‘affordability’ had only two references in the index.
