ABSTRACT This article analyses how the destruction of heritage by the Islamic State reflects the looping effect between heritage, identity and destruction. First, the relation between identity, heritage and the role of destruction within the process of identity affirmation and its consequences in the development of a patrimonial awareness are briefly characterized. Second, IS's emergence, doctrine and terrorism use are examined to enlighten the criteria behind the attack of specific cultural testimonies. Finally, we present the results of the content analysis of the Western press's coverage of the IS's heritage destructions, following the explanation of the study sample definition (305 articles from 11 newspapers, from June 2014 to September 2015). The level of mediatization of each act of destruction (number of articles and social media shares), the identity and goals of both direct and indirect enunciators, the strategies of discourse intensification and dramatization and the perceived causes and consequences of these attacks are also critically interpreted. In conclusion, we argue that, facing a sensation of loss, there is a strengthening of the Western patrimonial consciousness towards this heritage, despite being an essentially emotional reaction, with no analytical basis. The examined journalistic discourse contributes to the dissemination of IS's doctrine, as well as to the construction of a perception of confrontation with the “Muslim world,” increasingly seen as the “Other.”
