The verbiage comes off as offensive. I am the art therapist that Partridge describes. I organize a multitude of programs including bingo. I structure the programing through the lens of an art therapist. Being part of different aspects of my clients’ daily routine strengthens the therapeutic relationship and allows me to be consistent and available as an advocate and witness for clients. As an art therapist with a broader role in the elder community, I have seen that when I participate in programing outside of art making, the clients are more open and comfortable taking risks within art therapy. I do not agree with the author’s assessment of which programs can provide meaningful experiences. I believe in the strength and ability of the art therapist to foster a creative and supportive community which reimagines the possibilities of what art therapy can look like through daily creative engagement. As art therapists, we can support and witness happy and autonomous elders. When society views elders positively, stigma about aging decreases. Partridge provides expansive research, enhanced by evidence-based practice and well-illustrated case studies. The book is a useful resource with relatable concerns for art therapists working with elders. Moreover, this book explores how to advocate for and empower our elders by evolving the approaches.
