It is 1:30pm on a Friday and participants saunter up a few stairs from lunch to the room that I only just finished setting with a table cover and art supplies. For the next two hours, the multipurpose space in the drop-in center for runaway and homeless youth and young adults transforms into an open art therapy studio. I welcome back the regulars and introduce myself and art therapy to newcomers. Everyone settles in and reaches for art materials. The early chaos of people catching up with each other settles into focused creative activity interspersed with varied conversations on music, food, jobs, romance, as well as hopes, frustrations, stressors. I also begin to create art – perhaps a still life of the art supplies, portrait of a group member (with their permission), or response art. Throughout the group, I will do my best to facilitate a therapeutic process that meets the needs of each individual and the group as a whole. To manage the flow of therapy, Beutler, Forrester, Holt, and Stein (2013) note principles of therapeutic change. These empirically-tested psychotherapy interventions relate to various strategies, such as facilitating professional relationships by demonstrating empathy or developing a therapeutic contract by establishing clienttherapist role expectations. Even though there are common factors across the mental health disciplines, art therapists have particular considerations. For example, Schwarz, Snir, and Regev (2018) identify the necessity for intentionally selecting art materials, structuring sessions, and advancing creative process. The contributions to this issue offer research and practice to enhance understanding of principles of therapeutic change in art therapy.
