Comparative Efficiency of Polymer-coated Urea for Lowland Rice in Semi-Arid Tropics

ABSTRACT

Field experiments were conducted during 2016 and 2017 cropping system to evaluate the performance of polymer-coated urea (PCU) viz. neam coated urea (NCU) at different doses. The experiment was conducted at the University Seed Farm, Usman, Tarn Taran, Punjab, India. Treatments comprised of T1 control, T2; 100% NCU in 3 splits T3 100% PCU in 3 splits T4; 100% PCU in 1 split, T5; 75% PCU in 3 splits, T6: 50% PCU in 3 splits. Results revealed that T3 treatment had significantly higher grain yields than T1, T5, and T6 during 2016 and then T1, T2, T5, and T6 during 2017, respectively. Coming over to straw yield, T3 had significantly higher yields than T1 and T5 during 2016 and then T1 during 2017, respectively. Among yield attributes viz. panicle length, fertility percentage, T3 had significantly higher values than T1, T5 and T6 and at par with rest during both years. 1000 grain weight of T3 significantly higher values than T1, T2, T5 and T6 and at par with T4 during both years. 100% NCU (3 splits) and 100% PCU (1 split) reported to have lower values of nutrient efficiency parameters viz. recovery efficiency (%), agronomic efficiency (kg N ha−1) and physiological efficiency than 100% PCU (3 splits). Hence, 100% PCU (42% N) under three splits improves nutrient efficiency parameters and finally yields of low land rice crop in a sustainable manner.
