Innovation is the business survival skill of our time and purpose driven innovation is a survival superskill. It is the lifeblood of organisations serious about being disruptive and equally of those serious about navigating the disruption others lay before them.

Every now and then something comes along that is a game changer in its field. The ‘Six ‘I's® of Innovation’ is a purpose driven methodology invented by Natalie Turner of the Entheo Network1 that leaves all who experience it believing ‘Yes, I Can Innovate’. Its success lies in the demystification of the concept of innovation. Often, we hear people say that innovation is something ‘done by the innovation department’. But, by virtue of being human, we are already great innovators – although we might not yet know it and that is where the game changer comes in. It is practical, purpose driven, reality based more than theory based, and most of all it is human-centric.

According to Paul Brown, CEO of BOL Foods, the plant based meals company, ‘You have to have a north star, a purpose; without one everything you do is just tactical’. So often at corporate meetings the opening gambit is ‘Right, here's what we are going to do’, when it should be ‘why are we going to do this, what purpose does it serve?

Purpose is the reason why something is created or exists. As humans, everything we do has a purpose and that also applies to innovation. Purpose can be big (think sustainability) or organisational ‘why does our organisation exist?’ or at project/team level ‘what challenge are we addressing?’ or at an individual level – being motivated to exchange your talent for being part of something that floats your boat. Purpose gives people clarity on how they can contribute and if you link it to your organisation's overall strategy, you have a hand in glove situation.
