ABSTRACT

This study examines the process of shifting from being a frontline worker to performing a supervisory role, focusing on the challenges faced by new supervisors during this transition. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 24 supervisors from different practice settings in a large southern city in the US. The phenomenological method was employed in the data analysis. The findings indicate that the most significant challenges included peer-to-supervisor transition, an overwhelming workload, unclear role expectations, and managing seasoned staff. This study recommends further research, leadership training, and more social work supervision courses.
