This issue of Industrial Archaeology Review is the first to be published by Taylor and Francis, who took over our previous publisher, Maney, in . The editors are hopeful that readers will see no decrease in the quality of our journal and look forward to working with our new publisher to develop its content and presentation in the longer term. We would like to express our appreciation to the staff at Maney who have supported us in the past, in particular Linda Fisher, who was Production Editor for this journal for many years. This issue presents an unusually diverse mix of articles, in terms of both subject and geographical origin. Nigel Linge and Andy Sutton provide a detailed analysis of the archaeology of a very recent industry, that of the mobile phone. Amongst other things, this highlights how the buildings associated with modern industries such as this lack the distinguishing characteristics that many more traditional industries have left us, but the physical remains of its infrastructure is as distinctive as that of any other utility industry. Guano production has, from the perspective of its th-century European markets at least, been largely associated with Peru, but Pedro Pujante and Christophe Pollet reveal the history of an important guano industry in the Mejillones peninsula of northern Chile. Their article presents for the first time the results of the first phase of a long-term project to explore the industrial archaeology of this isolated region. In complete contrast, in terms of scale, Bradley Blankemeyer, Stephen Weise and Michael Scafuri provide a forensic analysis of a single component — a ballast pump — recovered from the wreck of the world’s first successful combat submarine, the H.L. Hunley, which has yielded valuable new information on the evolution of pump and submarine technology. A more conventional article comes from Fiona Wooler, summarising the results of an archaeological investigation of St Luke’s National School, Sheffield, which was an important element in this burgeoning industrial community from the end of the th century. Finally, much research in the past decade has highlighted the important role played by country house estates in the development of various technologies which we might consider as much industrial as domestic. The capability to provide reliable water supplies was developed for ornamental purposes in gardens before it became common inside the house, and Stephen Wass’s analysis of the water supply features in the park at Farnborough Hall, Warwickshire, provides an excellent illustration of the emergence of this technology. The next issue of IAR, ., is planned to be a themed issue devoted to textile mills, providing a companion to the two highly praised issues on this subject published in  and .
