This special issue of Aquaculture Economics and Management features six articles based on contributions to the International Association of Aquaculture Economics and Management (IAAEM) sponsored section on economics and marketing at the Aquaculture America onference in Las Vegas, Nevada, February 19–22, 2018. The IAAEM session contained 24 presentations in the program. The presentations highlight the increased importance of aquaculture production, supply chains and markets, and how this is caused by a number of innovations. As production and trade are expected to continue to increase (Kobayashi et al., 2015) and the market is becoming increasingly globalized (Anderson, Asche, & Garlock, 2018), these are factors that are likely to continue to be of high importance. There is, of course, now way the six articles in this special issue can represent the full extent of topics and species that were covered in all presentations. However, they provide a fair indication of the variation when it comes to topics, but less so when it comes to species. It is worthwhile to note that while there is an increasing focus on markets and demand, the special issue does not quite do justice to the many interesting contribution on the market side and particularly on demand and consumer preferences. Ecolabels have become an increasingly important part of the seafood market, and are increasingly important also for aquaculture products (Roheim, Bush, Asche, Sanchirico, & Uchida, 2018). The first paper in this issue, Amundsen et al. (2019) contributes to the discussion of the impacts of the ecolabels in investigating what levels of sustainability is addressed by common certification schemes. This is an important topic as the certification schemes are implemented at the farm level, but the environmental impacts are often measured at a regional level. Diseases are a significant risk and cost for most aquaculture species leading to production losses and price increases (Abolofia, Asche, & Wilen, 2017). It has been well documented how prevention and treatment can
