issues at stake (159). Jarvis challenges here one of the commonplaces in revolutionary historiography, namely that the revolutionaries excluded women from politics because of patriarchal notions that they inherited from Rousseau. This book, then, makes gender less central to our understanding of citizenship in the French Revolution. As Jarvis puts it: ‘Although the Dames considered gendered work a critical part of their citizenship, they did not articulate gender as the initial filter for delineating citizenship or as its immutable starting point’ (80). The research behind this book is impressive, and the level of detail brings the hustle and bustle of Les Halles in the late eighteenth century to life. Jarvis shows how the abstract ideas of economic and political theory debated by the revolutionaries in the convention affected, and were challenged by, daily life. The weaving together of economic theory and historical detail makes it difficult, at times, to follow the argument, but those who make the effort will be richly rewarded. Jarvis has placed social and economic history back at the centre of revolutionary historiography. Her book will remain indispensable reading for years to come.
