“Diversity” . . . I personally find just the idea of diversity in the art world to be in a constant state of a confused semantic flux. . . . I am grateful to exist in many different spheres of the art world, and I see within it at times communities that have deeply defined this word, and given it much heed and expansion that make clear sense to my own filters. I also see communities that seem to think that the word is beyond “art”—that it cannot be quantified or measured through an art lens—and therefore remain stuck in an era of moralistic creative confusion. For me the latter type of community is deeply problematic, as it exists on a level of humanistic erasure so stealthy that even its most legendary practitioners are completely bedazzled by it at times . . . I find that Christine Sun Kim’s work is in constant dialogue with this idea of erasure and, in a sense, of a privileged cultural silencing. Her extra-musical use of line, shadow, and circularity speaks of a clearly documented push-back against a cultural erasure that she obviously refuses to allow to shut down her creative flow. She is creating illuminating light through theoretical cracks that in another century, I believe would have blinded us all.
