Following the abolition of slavery in 1848, approximately 75,000 Indian indentured workers were brought to the French Caribbean regions of Martinique, Guadeloupe and Guiana to work on the sugar plantations in order to fill the void left by the recently freed Africans.1¹ More than a century later, in 1972, Maurice Virassamy’s novel Le Petit coolie noir became the first literary work centered primarily on the historical and cultural narratives of the Indian Diaspora in the French Caribbean.2² The Indianité movement of the 1980s in Guadeloupe, championed by Ernest Moutoussamy in his work La Guadeloupe et son Indianité, sought to recognize the hitherto unexamined history of the Indian indentured workers and celebrate the traces of their cultural traditions as an equal part of the Guadeloupean cultural landscape. Drawing inspiration from this movement, writers such as A. Minatchy-Bogat, J. Nagapin and Singaravelou in Guadeloupe, and R. Confiant, G. L’Étang, A. Gamess, L. Mangatal, E. Pepin, M. Ponnamah, C. Sacarabany and Max Sulty in Martinique moved the chronicles of this disparaged group from the periphery and placed them squarely within francophone literary discourse.3³
