A self-produced podcast to support EFL learners in Japan

One of the biggest issues facing learners of English studying in EFL environments is with their listening comprehension skills. This is particularly true of Japanese learners of English and is due to several different factors. Firstly, whilst the Japanese language has a predictable phonology, with clear demarcation of syllables, the presence of connected speech in English poses a considerable challenge to Japanese learners. This problem is compounded by the listening materials frequently used in Japanese educational environments that tend to feature slow and inauthentic dialogues (Yanagawa 2016). In addition, Japanese learners living in Japan seldom have the opportunity to hear authentic English speech on a day-to-day basis. As a result, when faced with rapid, natural speech, Japanese EFL students often face considerable difficulties in correctly perceiving what they hear.
