Assessment of spatial concentration variation and deposition of bioaerosol in a dental clinic during oral cleaning

The dental clinic environment is relatively closed, and many aerosols carrying pathogenic microorganisms are generated during the diagnosis and treatment of infectious patients, which increases the infection risk by dental staff. In this study, Serratia marcescens and ΦX174 phage were used as the releasing sources during the oral cleaning process to investigate bioaerosol migration and deposition. The high concentration spatial regions and high concentration deposition areas of bioaerosol in the dental clinic were quantitatively analyzed. The results showed that the highest bioaerosol concentration was located at the S1 sampling point near the mouth of the dentist. At the equipment trays, the two kinds of bioaerosols deposition rates per unit area were as high as 10.5% and 6.6%, respectively. After oral cleaning, it took 90 min to discharge 99.9% of the bioaerosols from the dental clinic. This study could provide some reference for reducing the exposure risk of dental staff in the dental clinic and creating a safe dental clinic environment.
