An Empirical Analysis on Factors Affecting Water Deer Roadkills in Korea

This paper empirically analyzes the characteristics and conditions of roads that affect roadkills of water deer in Korea, and suggests strategies for the reduction of such roadkills. A total of 133 water deer roadkills that occurred during one year from May 1, 2018 to April 30, 2019 are included in the analysis. The Kaplan-Meier estimator and survival regression are applied as analytic tools. According to the empirical results, it seems that the probability of water deer-vehicle collisions is significantly lower on sites with more lighting facilities, less traffic, fewer lanes, a flat road or uphill slope, longer distance from a water source, more urbanized areas, or a speed reduction sign. The results are largely similar when the error term assumes a Weibull distribution rather than an exponential distribution, suggesting that the analysis results are robust.
