Abstract

In this article, the author explores the affective and strategic factors influencing US-Texan relations during the period surrounding Texas’ secession from Mexico and its subsequent annexation by the United States. The research focuses on historical accounts of, and contemporary documents from, the era viewed through the lens of modern theories of irredentism and nationalism. The work concludes by contrasting the ‘Texas crisis’ with modern day examples of irredentist behavior, with a particular focus on Russian policy toward Ukraine.
