Spatiotemporal characteristics of human activity on coastal landscape of Laizhou Bay

Quantification and localization of the intensity are the key points for evaluating the impact of human activities on coastal wetland environment. A Human Activity Intensity Index (HAII) and a spatial simulation method were presented based on the resilience of nine landscape types to human activities, the attenuation and combined effects of different landscape types and the different ecological conditions within the same landscape type. To verify the accuracy and suitability of the method, the coastal wetlands of Laizhou Bay were chosen as the study area with four period (1990–2016) GIS data and seven representative stations field survey. The change of landscape patterns, characteristics of landscape heterogeneity, and human activity intensity in Laizhou Bay were analyzed. The results showed that: the number of patches (NP) increased 129% in the study area during 1990–2016. The change in the landscape pattern was essentially consistent with changes in human disturbance intensity and urban expansion. Construction land area ratio increase from 5% to about 25%, the conversion of farmland to construction land accounted for 78% of the total growth, indicating that human activities caused by towns and ports are distributed in points that have a spatial aggregation effect, which causes the increase of complexity and heterogeneity of landscape patches. The HAII is represented by rapidly increase from points to surface, indicating that the method constructed in this study clearly reflected the trend. The landscape of salt fields and cultured ponds were distributed in sheet distribution, usually connected with the construction land, so did the combined effects at the edge. Therefore, the proposed HAII calculation and spatial simulation method reflected the attenuation and combined effect can be used in the evaluation of human activity intensity in coastal areas.
