Sedimentary Waves and Reconstruction of Bottom Currents in the Novaya Zemlya Trough of the Kara Sea

Abstract

Reconstruction of bottom currents has been performed for the first time using the distribution of sedimentary waves in the Novaya Zemlya Trough in the Kara Sea based on the data from cruises 69, 72, and 81 of the R/V Akademik Mstislav Keldysh in 2017, 2018, and 2020. This work was completed within the program of the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, Russian Academy of Sciences, “Ecosystems of the Siberian Arctic Seas.” The fields of sedimentary waves were identified; their orientation, morphology, the heights of waves, and the wavelengths were determined; and the conclusion was reached that they are formed due to the bottom currents. It was assumed that these currents are slope flows resulting from cascading. Cascading can appear in winter on the shelf during the formation of dense bottom water, which descends along the sloping bottom towards the Novaya Zemlya Trough, or during the inflow of denser Barents Sea waters into the Kara Sea through the Kara Gates Strait.
