A Galerkin Method for the Weak Formulation of Current Diffusion and Force Balance in Tokamak Plasmas

This paper presents a new numerical approach to the simulation of plasma equilibrium evolution in tokamaks. It is based on an unusual coupling formulation of current diffusion and axi-symmetric equilibrium equations that does not require the use of flux-surface averages and allows for fast Newton-type iterations schemes. A detailed derivation of the coupled system of non-linear equations and its discretization is provided. Numerical examples, based on an implementation in the free-boundary equilibrium code FEEQS, highlight feasibility and applicability.
