Origin of hydrocarbons in the water of the river–sea mixing zone: A case study from the Chernaya River — The Sevastopol bay, Black Sea

Oil and petroleum products are among the most common pollutants in the marine environment. One of the main difficulties in interpreting oil pollution data for the seas, especially in cases of low concentrations, is the natural biogenic origin of many hydrocarbons which are typical for the chemical composition of oil. The aim of the work was to determine the total content, distribution and main sources of hydrocarbons input in the water of the river–sea mixing zone (the Chernaya River) using gas chromatographic methods. Based on the analysis of diagnostic ratios, as well as the principal component analysis it has been established that the main source of hydrocarbon input to the estuarine zone of the Chernaya River can be considered as the autochthonous production, and the input of oil and petroleum products is the third most important source.
