The 48th annual Medieval and Renaissance Music Conference took place from 1 to 4 July 2020. Owing to adaptations put in place for covid-19, the conference, which was originally set to take place in Edinburgh, was delivered virtually. Papers examined themes as varied as notation, music and cities, religion and spirituality, work towards archival histories, organology and chant. These themes fell into the broad categories of performance and performance practices, editorial practices, and music and culture. The conference registration was completed online and 475 registered delegates—making this the largest MedRen conference to date—were invited to assemble for virtual drinks receptions each day. Participants had the opportunity to meet via breakout sessions and move from virtual ‘room’ to ‘room’ to chat with other delegates (drinking whatever they had to hand—alcoholic or non-alcoholic—mixology advice was shared freely). Paper presentations were pre-recorded and posted to a secure site where delegates could view papers in their own time zone and attend live Q&A sessions with the authors at scheduled time slots throughout the day. Of those in attendance, 27.5 per cent were new attendees, with a blend of early career researchers, independent researchers and faculty members from many institutions.
