Reproduction of Lake Water Purification from Chernobyl 137Сs in Eastern Fennoscandia

Abstract

Variations in the concentration of 137Cs in lake water over 12–19 years of its migration were reproduced with the use of exponential and sorption–diffusion models in calculations. The concentrations of 137Cs in water of the deep (Нav > 7 m) lakes Inari and Vyalozero were decreasing with half-periods of 3.6 and 5.6 years, respectively, within which 137Cs concentration in water decreased by half. The purification of the deep Ladoga water from 137Cs was reproduced with the use of a two-component exponential model at half-periods T1 and T2, equal to 0.25 and 11 years, and the contributions of components of 0.85 and 0.15, respectively. For lakes Inari and Vyalozero, the application of the sorption–diffuse model of 137Cs absorption by bottom sediments in the reproduction of water pollution by 137Cs was restricted by 1987–1993 and 1987–1998, respectively, when the experimental and calculated data were in a satisfactory agreement. The reserves of 137Cs in the water volume of lakes Inari, Vyalozero, and Ladoga in 1988 were 1.1, 1.6, and 4.3% of the deposition onto water bodies in 1986.
