The articles in this issue take us from the antebellum United States to a Soviet museum in Chelyabinsk in the wake of World War II, from the shores of a Guatemalan lake to ballast piles along Canada’s eastern seaboard. Along the way, readers encounter toxic legacies and courtroom drama. The issue begins with a forum on toxics and toxicants organized by Iris Borowy. Originally slotted for the April issue, production complications delayed its publication until now. Drawing together articles that span four continents, the forum underscores just how difficult it is to assign blame or trace causality in an increasingly toxic world. It is followed by five original articles that challenge readers to rethink some untested assumptions.
