ABSTRACT

Fashion does not just reflect, but also shapes the life of people. Thus, fashion is a useful way of studying social, cultural and economic change. In the decade known as ‘the Sixties’, it paved the way for a new social, cultural and political climate. This article shows that Britain underwent a profound Europeanisation in fashion in a decade characterised by the global marketing success of British culture. It argues that the popularity of British boutiques, designers and youth cultures epitomised a new idea of Britishness in the 1960s because they were profoundly influenced by Continental fashion. The article reconstructs the creation, image and influence of the so-called ‘Continental Look’ in men’s and women’s clothing in Britain in the 1960s and shows to what extent the British fashion revolution associated with the term ‘Swinging London’ was based on the import of and references to Continental fashion design.
