Partial clinker replacement by calcined clays for green cement production

Recently, intensive attention has been paid to environmental concerns for securing a more sustainable future. In particular, numerous research studies have been directed toward emerging green materials for minimizing carbon dioxide footprint. In this work, the authors aimed to fabricate an environmentally friendly cement by implementing partial addition of calcined clays in place of clinker. The clay minerals labeled as yellow (YC) and green (GC) were initially calcined at different temperatures in separate processes. The mixed design step was then carried out by replacing with 3, 5 and 10 wt% calcined clay minerals in place of clinker to obtain ordinary Portland cement. Ten different samples (N1 to N10) were successfully prepared. The samples were subjected to some mineralogical, physical and mechanical analyses. The findings clearly showed that the addition of partially calcined clay minerals in substitution for clinker is a very effective method to obtain green cement. Further, the compressive strength measurements (after 28 days) revealed that the highest value (56.4 MPa), which is relatively greater than that of the undoped N10 (54.5 MPa), can be achieved with the incorporation of 10 wt% YC750. In conclusion, the authors report that the partial replacement of clinker by calcined clay can be an alternative green cement blend.
