It is with interest that we read the announcement from the Department of Health Services, Office of Inspector General (OIG) with respect to review of Medicare part B Urine drug testing (UDT) services for patients with substance abuse disorder. It was reported that, in 2018, there was a 30% improper payment rate for UDT and 71.7% overpayment rate for definitive drug testing for 22 or more drug classes. [1] The OIG is currently reviewing UDT services regarding allowable services for substance use disorder related diagnoses.
