Chemical cues encode information used by conspecifics for a variety of reasons, including the assessment of the genotype of an individual in terms of genetic quality, diversity, similarity, and compatibility. Host microbiota are assumed to play a key role in genotype-associated chemical cues, but how is the information on the genetic makeup of an animal conveyed through odorant molecules produced by its microbial symbionts? In their comprehensive systematic review, (Schubert et al. (2021) elegantly synthesize the existing studies trying to answer this central question by focusing on a key component of the immune system, the major histocompatibility complex (MHC).
