The Flip-Flop Effect on Anodized Aluminum Oxide Films

Abstract

A flip-flop effect has been revealed at the anodization of aluminum oxide and subsequent electrochemical deposition of Co/Ni nanoparticles. The angle dependences of the reflection spectra of metallized anodized aluminum oxide films have been measured. Using the conditions of light interference in a thin film, the values of the effective refraction index and film thickness in dependence on the anodization time have been calculated by the recorded interference reflection spectra. The quantitative evaluation of the flip-flop effect has been carried out based on the spectral shifts and the values of spectral changes in the tristimulus values of the CIE L*a*b* system. It has been shown that the effectiveness of the flip-flop effect depended on the acid nature (sulfuric, phosphoric, or chromic) of the anodizing solution. It has been demonstrated that the greatest flip-flop effect is attained at double anodization in chromic and phosphoric acids.
