Artificial light-triggered smart nanochannels relying on optoionic effects

Light-triggered smart nanochannels based on optoionic effects are currently explored in the fields of nanoconfined ion management and photoelectric conversion because of their noninvasive external field control, intelligent ion responses, and efficient photoelectric-conversion properties. Recent progress in generating chemical changes or electrochemical gradients with light and in manipulating the migration behavior of ions in nanoconfined channels is summarized here, with a focus on the construction strategies and the optoionic mechanisms involved. The tremendous challenges faced by light-triggered ion channels have been raised and the promising future is prospected.
