ABSTRACT

Over the last 50 years, British holidaymakers have chosen Europe as their main holiday destination. Inclusive tours often constituted the gateway to travelling abroad for the first time. The article focuses on the rise of package tours to Spain in the 1970s and 1980s, which has become British holidaymaker’s favourite holiday destination abroad. By concentrating on holiday practices, it argues that individual experiences by package tourists should be taken seriously as they highlight differences to domestic holiday patterns. It further argues that package tourists increasingly engaged with the European holiday destination. Thus, the Europeanisation of British holiday culture was significant in two respects. Firstly, British holiday culture as a whole changed because of the increase in holidays abroad, and secondly, vacations in Europe often led to an increased interest in and engagement with the European destination via consumer goods and sights.
